My Top 5 Fall Wardrobe Updates

Here are my top 5 ways to update your fall look.

Green is the New Black

The color of the season is less Kermit and more Pistachio. Take a risk and go head toe green, or maybe just try one or two of the below items for a quick update.

70’s Vibe

Bring a little 70’s inspo to your work look. A midi skirt, slouch boot, and plaid blazer all say 70’s working girl.

New Renaissance

Move over Coachella a new festival has hit the runway. This season designers took their inspiration from the popular Renaissance festival. Toss on a puffy sleeve turtleneck and pearls and you are ready to joust.

The Bright Side

No longer reserved for Spring, brights are now a year-round color. Try a jewel-toned jacket and neon sweater. If that is not for you, try a bright accessory for an easy refresh.

Statement Coats

During the chilly months, you can look chic by just rethinking your outerwear. Your coat should not be an afterthought - it can make or break an outfit. This season, try a long coat, cape or statement color. The complements will keep you warm all winter long!

It’s Here! The Sale of the Year!

For me, the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale is like Christmas in July. I know that it almost 100 degrees outside, but nothing is more exciting than thinking about my fall wardrobe. Below are some items from the sale that have me wishing for 50-degree weather. Hurry because a lot of sizes and pieces are already sold out!

An easy way to bring this fall’s spice color trend into your wardrobe is with a scarf or T-Shirt. Pair it with a classic trench and a pair of leather pants - this look will last for years to come.

If you loved stuffed animals this is for you. The teddy bear faux fur trend continues this season. I love pairing an over sized coat with a sleek silk skirt.

Bring a little wine to work with this look. I promise it will not drive you to drink!

My Summer Dress Pics!

Nothing says summer like a dress. Toss one on and be ready in 60 seconds flat. My picks follow the “Buy less, choose well” mantra. They will be instant summer classics that you can wear for years to come.

If you have not heard of Reformation yet you need to check them out. Sustainability is their top priority and they have been a carbon-neutral company since 2015! Reformation is a great source of chic, classic summer dresses.

I have had a wrap dress in my closet for 20 years. This silhouette is classic and flattering on many different body types.  I love this washable royal blue version from Everlane - another conscious company who’s completely transparent about their manufacturing process. Their goal is to design staple items that will last. Everlane has a cult-like following and people wait in lines outside of their NYC storefront. (No fast fashion here!)

Here is a cute fit-and-flare dress from a boutique brand called Rolla’s. This is not upcycled but the classic shape will last for years to come. Add a colorful bag and printed shoe for some fun in the sun!

Best Swimsuit For Your Body Type

I know swimsuit season makes you want to run for the hills! Trying to find a flattering bathing suit is like finding a needle in a haystack. It’s so frustrating! The trick is to know what to look for. Below are my tips for common body types.

Hourglass Shape

You Have Equal Bust and Hips Plus A Well Defined Waist

Work that waist! This season there are some great belted swimsuit options to define your waist. This Anthropologie one piece highlights your bust and your waist. Toss on a jumpsuit and head straight to the beach or pool.

Pear Shape

Your Hips and Upper Legs Are Larger Than Your Bust

When you are pear-shaped it is always a good idea to keep the bottom of your suit dark and the top light and bright - drawing the eye upwards. Most pear-shaped ladies tend to have smaller arms and shoulders. I love this Target two piece because your eye goes immediately to the white top. The multi-directional stripes on the bottom have a slimming effect. Accessories DO belong poolside. Try a pair of statement earrings like these from Honey Rose & K.

Athletic Shape

Your Hips and Shoulders Are Even With A Straight-ish Waist

Most athletic shaped ladies want to make their shoulders seem less broad.  A halter or one shoulder swimsuit will do the trick! This one shoulder Solid & Stripe suit is perfect. It has an added bonus of a colored blocked center that helps give the visual illusion of a well-defined waist.

Apple Shape

You Carry Your Weight In the Midsection and Your Waist Isn’t Defined

Most Apple shaped women have amazing legs - so work it! This is all about drawing the eye to the right places. The most common mistake for an apple shape is to wear a super loose and flowy swim top. This just adds visual weight and makes you seem rounder than you are. Here is a great solution from Target.  The black is slimming and the lace V-neck breaks up your shape and draws the eye exactly where you want it. Go from the beach to dinner by tossing on a long knit skirt, add a clutch and these statement earrings. Trust me, this suit will get you a dinner date ;-)

Spring Sandals under $100

This month’s blog is brought to you by the letter S...

Finally, spring has sprung! Take your toes out of hibernation and try one of my favorite sandal picks.  Don’t forget to book your first pedicure of the season!

S is for Spring Suede

Yes! It is no longer a faux pas to wear suede in the spring and summer. Follow me @jamibriggs on Instagram to see how I wear my suede sandals.

S is for Slides

Give your flip flops a rest and go for a pair of slides. A slide is an answer to a slip on casual sandal.

S is for Statement

To me, nothing is better than a T-shirt, jeans and a statement shoe. Add some sparkle to your wardrobe with these.

S is for Strappy

This is the perfect neutral strappy sandal. The gold hardware gives it a little extra twist. It is a smidge over $100, but you know J. Crew runs a sale every other day.

S is for Shells

Get on board with the shell accessory trend this season. It is like wearing the beach on your feet!

Runway vs Reality Spring 2019 Trends.

I know you may see runway looks in a magazine or on Instagram and think to yourself “how does to translate to real life?” Here are 5 trends inspired by the runway and how they can work for reality!

Ruffles are having a moment this season. Many designers from Gucci, Coach, and Valentino sent ruffled frocks down the runway. The’ ruffle dresses, from Marc Jacobs, were exceptional! If you wanted to bring just a little ruffle in your life, this Anthropologie dress is perfect. It is a classic with a twist that will last for years.

Cargo Pockets

Every few years the safari trend comes back around. Even if you are not going on safari in Africa you could bring that vibe to your wardrobe this season. I love this midi with cargo pockets from Land’s End.

Boho is the trend just will not die…...This season the new take on boho is tie-dye.

I am not a boho kinda gal, but I could be semi-OK with the tie-dye look on this bangle. It says “I am current” without being ridiculous.

Mellow Yellow

Yellow is the hot color this season and Gucci gave us a taste of yellow with a side of disco. I love the idea of yellow for the evening. This Top Shop slip dress has a classic silhouette and a more approachable way to do yellow for evening.

Head To Toe Neutrals

This trend is not going away! This is one trend where runway and reality are not that far apart! A neutral trench is an easy way to create this look, and nothing is more classic than a trench for spring. If you do not have one, you need one! It is a wardrobe essential.

If you saw some of my posts last month, you know that I am all about a good basic. With Valentine's day approaching, I came up with a list of cool, cupid-approved accessories to bring some romance to your basics.

I Want You To Spend Your Holiday Cash.......On Boring Basics!

Happy New Year!

I am going to help you spend your holiday gift cards that are burning a hole in your wallet.

Now, I COULD post a bunch of trendy items that you could blow your wad on. Instead, here are some Jami-approved basics that will last. I know I know, this is semi-boring. Plus, all of the other bloggers and stylists are sucking you in with their latest OOTD. Buy a good blazer…get that great white T-Shirt…blah, blah, blah. I sound like a broken record!

This year has been a learning experience for me. I entered many of my clients’ closets and I was surprised at how many clothes they have. I also realized that many people are browsing the internet, finding the latest top in the season’s “it” color and think “oh that is cute!” Click. Done.  I totally get it and I have done it myself!

So, in 2019, let's try to make better fashion decisions and ask these questions before you click:

How will this fit into my wardrobe?

How many ways can I wear it?

Will the item still be relevant after this year?

Is this made of quality materials?

Before you click away your holiday cash make sure you have your basics covered. Here is my list of chic investment pieces that will stand the test of time and could mix in with your impulse buys.

Best pants ever!

These pants are amazing and super comfortable! They look great with heels or flats. I know $300 for a pair of pants is steep, but you will wear them every week.  They can also be found for less on resale sites such as eBay or Poshmark.

Must Have Cashmere Sweater

Everlane has the best cashmere sweaters at a decent price point. A lightweight cashmere sweater can be worn for three seasons out of the year. Wear it alone when it is warmer, or layer it during the winter months. I treat my cashmere sweater as an “elevated sweatshirt”. Pair it with cool sweats or yoga pants when you are running around town.

**Everlane is completely transparent about its supply chain, which is extremely important especially when it comes to cashmere.

Classic T-Shirt

I said it before, and I will say it again… I have been wearing this T-shirt for the last 10 years. Enough said. Pair it with literally anything. A blazer, lace skirt, leather jacket, or alone with statement jewelry.

Tailored Blazer

I repeat… you need a good blazer. This is a well-made wool blazer at a good price. Also, J. Crew runs a sale every other day. With that in mind, maybe hold out for the sale. This one looks great with a T-shirt, cashmere sweater, turtleneck, denim shirt, silk blouse, or a printed top.

All of my clients out there, let us know how you feel about the J. Crew blazer in the comments below.

Perfect Bodysuit

Now you may think I am totally crazy to spend this much on a bodysuit. However, you will be surprised how easy it is to work into your wardrobe. It is a great layering item. Wear it under a denim shirt, silk button-down, blazer, leather or denim jacket. It is absolutely worth it!

My Holiday Hit List

My Holiday Hit List

Gifts that keep on giving… these are my top five items to give and get this season!

Upgraded Pajamas

Time to ditch the old ugly t-shirt from your work team building exercise! These are so soft and comfortable and worth every penny.

Treat Your Feet

These are not your granny’s slippers – even Meghan Markle wears them.

Make A Statement

I have said this 100 times – statement earrings can transform any outfit. These have a modern look and are from my favorite local jewelry designer Honey Rose & K.

Yes, You Need A Turtleneck

AND you have heard me lament on turtlenecks. They are a perfect layering piece. I love them!  This simple black turtleneck dress is from the local, mobile boutique Amber Row. It looks amazing with a blazer, leather, or jean jacket. You could accessorize with a scarf or statement earring… I could go on and on.

The Semi-Unpractical Splurge

I have been DYING for a belt bag. Not your 90’s fanny pack – this one has a detachable chain so you can transform it from a shoulder bag to wear as a belt.  It may not be such a good long term investment BUT if you were really nice this year…

Happy Holidays!

My Top Fall Shoe Picks!

Fashion muse, Iris Apfel once said, “If your hair is done properly and you’re wearing good shoes, you can get away with anything.”

I could not agree more with Iris! We all own at least one T-shirt, and a pair of jeans. The shoes we select for even the most basic outfit can completely change the look. A cool sneaker would give you casual weekend vibe. Pair your Jeans and Tee with a heel, and you are ready for date night. This season go out of your comfort zone and try dressing from your shoe up. With so many styles out there today, there is something chic for everyone.

Here are my top 5 shoe picks at a range of price points.

Kitten Heel

MEOW. The shoe that Audrey Hepburn made popular is more ME and less OW. Kitten heels are both stylish and comfortable.

Slouchy Boots

My personal favorite this season is the slouchy boot. A slouch boot with a floral print dress or a midi skirt is reminiscent of the 70’s.

Working Girl

Remember the scene in Working Girl when Tess changes from her white commuting sneakers to her office heels? Well this trend is the opposite of that! These are comfortable shoes you can wear all day long.

Animal Print

Treat your animal print shoe like a neutral. The styles range from heels and flats to sneakers, so you can choose what works best for your lifestyle.

Party Girl

Time to put your dancing shoes on! Think metallic, sequins, and rhinestones.

How To Incorporate Fall 2018 Trends Into Your Existing Wardrobe

Below are four big trends this fall with ideas on how to incorporate them into your existing wardrobe.........Read to the end! Photos of me from the 80's. Yikes!

Stealing from the Guys

Menswear inspired fabrics like plaid, check, and herringbone is huge this season. It is easy to mix a plaid blazer into your current wardrobe. Pair it with jeans and a T-shirt for a more casual feel. Below are two options at two different price points.

What does your coat say?

Never buy a boring coat! Pick something with at least one interesting detail or feature. Maybe an oversized collar, unique trim detail, or unexpected color. A statement coat is the best way to stand out from the crowd!

Call of the Wild

Animal prints are huge this season. The easiest way to incorporate this trend into your current wardrobe is with an animal print accessory. You could try an earring, necklace, bag, or shoe. No matter what item you pick, let it be the statement piece.

It’s Back……The 80’s!

This was not my best decade when it comes to personal style. For me it is was filled with scrunchies, thick socks, bad hair, big glasses, and buck teeth. Mistakes were made in this decade. However, I am taking my own advice, and going a little out of my comfort zone.

What To Wear This Summer

Summer, the most wonderful time of the year! Sun, weddings, graduations, cookouts, the beach, and the pool.  What could be better? Below are some styling ideas for the best season of them all.

Work Style

Shirt dresses are a big trend this season and are perfect for the office. This J. Crew shirt dress is very slimming with the fuller skirt and a cinched waist. Take this classic up a notch with statement accessories. The pink earring and sandal will make you stand out. The tan structured tote is a professional and stylish accessory for the office.

Weekend Style

I love a chambray fabric and a paper bag waist. Both elements are shown in this Topshop short. One styling tip on shorts is to try buying a size up. A looser fit may have a more slimming effect. Wear these shorts with a tucked in a traditional white T-shirt from Hanes luxe label. It is a must-have item that you will wear all year long. The statement earring, suede slide, and crossbody bag all round out the look. If you have not figured it out yet, I am all about earrings!

Date Night Style

If you are going to an event and you want to stand out and look super sophisticated, then you need a Self-Portrait top. Everyone else will be wearing last year’s off the shoulder top (YAWN) and you will look so stylish. If you have not heard of Self-Portrait, then you really must check them out! The top is an investment, so I kept the rest of the outfit budget friendly. If you are going to wear such a statement item, you need to keep the rest of the look super simple. Black jeans, black studs, simple black clutch, and an ankle strap heel.

The jeans are Gap for Good, which is an eco-friendly jean that uses less water during the manufacturing process. I really love that!

2018 Swimwear Trends

The options this season are endless and include one shoulder, belts, scoop backs, high cut legs, polka dots, smocking, leopard prints, and bright colors.  The swimsuits I highlighted below are worth a look.

Mara Hoffman color.png

Mara Hoffman is my go-to swimwear designer.  She is known for her use of color and patterns. If you don’t want to wear a tiny bikini or a tankini, you may like Mara Hoffman. Her styles feel modern without letting it all hang out.

Spice Swimwear.png

The spicy color palette this season feels fresh and updated. This Solid and Striped belted suit in a pretty rust color hits the mark.

Polka dot swimwear.png

Want to feel like Julia Roberts circa Pretty Woman? This Sideway suit is called “stomp the divots!” Polka dots are the “it” pattern this season.

rash guard swim.png

Save your skin from the sun! Over the past few years, we have seen great rash guards and surf suit options.

I love this nautical striped rash guard with a with a solid navy bottom

This surf suit has a high cut leg and open back, making it not feel so covered up.

My Top 3 Mother's Day Gifts to Give & Get

Last minute Mother’s Day gifts to give and get!

1. The best Eberjey PJ’s! Super soft and comfortable. You won’t want to take them off.

2. Catbird Sweet Nothing solid gold choker. The perfect delicate layering piece. If you are not familiar with Catbird, they are a Brooklyn based jeweler with great modern everyday pieces.

3. If you are the best mom ever, then you need to ask for this bag.  I have been obsessing over it for the last week!

Spring Wardrobe

Spring has finally arrived, and it is time to start thinking about what to wear this upcoming season.  Below are my wardrobe suggestions for your spring trip, a day at the office, a casual weekend, or a night out.

Vacation Style

Vacation Style.jpg

For the last couple of seasons, the midi skirt has made a comeback.  Nothing says spring like a seersucker midi. When you are wearing a skirt that has more volume it is always good to pair it with a top that is more form fitting. This tank bodysuit from J. Crew is perfect! I love a bodysuit with a bottom that is loose and flowing. This outfit is truly all about the accessories. The yellow earring and yellow slide make it fun and sunny (like spring), and this tan tote is a perfect carry on!  The bag is Sophie Hulme, a British designer who has amazing structured bags.

Office Style

Spring work outfit.jpg

Pastels are another big trend this season.  Why not give pastels a try at the office? This pink Theory wool blazer is the statement piece, so I kept the pants and tank simple. The large hoops are Jennifer Fisher. If you see a celebrity wearing hoops, they are probably hers. Getting dressed should be fun, and nothing is more fun than these pink “Boss Lady” heels. They are Sophia Webster, another British designer, known for her whimsical shoe designs.

Weekend Style

Spring weekend outfit.jpg

Update your weekend look with a stripe. This Madewell striped short sleeve shirt can be worn a few ways. Try it with a full tuck, a front tuck, or tie it at your waist to give definition. When it comes to jeans, there are so many denim fits to choose from right now! There is something for everyone and for every shape.  I love these Frame cropped straight leg jeans for summer. The dark wash is a current trend and the straight leg feels fresh. Pair it with the classic Gucci camera case and these Honey Rose & K mixed metal earrings. Tretorns are back and are a great spring sneaker option!

Night Out Style

Spring nightout.jpg

This spring try pajama pants for a night out.  They are so comfortable you may not want to leave the house. Just like the travel outfit, I am pairing this loose bottom with a bodysuit. The red tassel earrings and red suede heels turn it from a pajama party to Saturday night fever! Keep your bag simple with a black clutch.

Remember to book a styling appointment for all of your wardrobe needs this spring season!
